Scheduling Classes

ScheduleClasses

College can be an exciting, yet confusing time for many new students. From finding your way around campus to being away from home for the first time, it's no wonder that you may feel overwhelmed. One of the most crucial tasks that you will be faced with is the creation of your college schedule. Consider the following to help you map out a schedule that best serves your specific needs. The schedule of classes is available under the Current Students menu on the Ogeechee Technical College Web page.

Program Requirements

Because Ogeechee Technical College offers a wide variety of degree, diploma, and technical certificates, different students may be required to complete different courses for their program of study. You can find the program descriptions in our Catalog and Student Handbook. If you have taken courses at other colleges or universities, you may be able to transfer some core requirements.

Course Selection

College courses require more studying and homework than your high school classes. When planning your first-term college schedule, it is a good idea to balance the types of classes you are taking. Don't only take classes that require a lot of reading and writing; try to balance those classes with courses in math or science. Likewise, think carefully before taking two lab science classes or two math classes the same term. Having a mixture of courses that includes reading, writing, problem solving, critical thinking, and hands-on practice will keep you mentally stimulated and interested in learning.

Course Load

To be considered a full-time student, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours. Try to balance your schedule so you are not too overwhelmed. Think about your commitments outside of school. Do you have children? Work responsibilities? Other activities that take up your time? Do not take more classes than you can reasonably expect to be successful in or you will risk lowering your GPA or losing financial aid. Manage your time wisely!

Time of Day

Ogeechee Technical College offers classes on many different days and at many different times, so you should be able to find a schedule that works for you. If you have a job where you need to work evenings, you can schedule your classes for the mornings and vice versa. If you are just not a morning person, then you can schedule your classes for the afternoons (just keep in mind that there may be more distractions for you to skip afternoon or evening classes). Furthermore, if you only want to go to classes a few days a week, you can plan your schedule so that you only have classes on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday.

Classroom Location

When planning your college schedule, you need to be aware of the locations of the classrooms. You need to allow enough time to get from one location to another without being late to class. If you have a class that ends at 9:50 a.m., you may not have time to walk to a 10:00 a.m. class that is on the other side of campus. When viewing the course offerings (Class Schedule) be aware of the campus location and whether the class is a lecture class, hybrid, or online. Refer to your campus map to help you determine where your classes are located.
